A resident of southern London, who wishes to remain anonymous, has stated that she plans to willfully infect herself with Ebola as soon as the deadly disease reaches the UK. The person claims to be in her early 30s, to work in the medical field, and to be affiliated with a hospital in the Sutton suburb of London.

“The first cases always get optimal treatment, because you want to contain the disease and keep the person alive. You want to show that everything is under control,” she said.

“As soon as the threshold of new cases is broken, the NHS will be overwhelmed and treatment quality will drop drastically.”

Ebola survivors are immune to the particular strain of the epidemic they survive, and will thus not need treatment again, even if exposed to the virus another time. The resident gambles that her chances for survival will be much higher if she gets infected in the beginning of an outbreak in her country than at a later stage.

“With proper care, my chances for survival will be around 80-90%. Without, they drop to a 10-20%,” she claims. “The epidemic is already a pandemic, but governments and health agencies around the world are in denial.”

The resident is monitoring TV and internet sources during the day, and has alarms set up in regular intervals during the night. As soon as an Ebola case is confirmed or suspected, she plans to travel to the area immediately.

“We’ve seen how Ebola cases are dealt with in Dallas, where the vomit of a man infected with Ebola was cleaned without fencing off the area or even wearing special protection.”

The woman did not want to disclose how exactly she plans to infect herself, but said that she would keep herself very hydrated during the incubation period. The incubation period of Ebola lasts from 2 to 21 days, during which the victim is not showing symptoms and is not contagious.

When asked whether she thinks her behavior might be selfish, she answered, “It definitely is selfish, but I don’t even want to know what happens when people realize that this is all really happening. Everyone will be selfish then, but then it will be too late. I’m doing the only logical thing for me.”
